ACCESSIBILITY

Steve McEvoy

Steve McEvoy has lived with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy and learning disabilities since birth.  A 1999 graduate of St. Michael’s College in VT, USA, Steve worked in several customer service roles in Boston, but always felt that he belonged in the classroom.  In 2008, Steve received his MA in teaching 7-12 secondary social studies from Teachers College Columbia University. However, throughout his career, a pattern emerged of seemingly open doors quickly closing. Thanks to these experiences, coupled with a desire to help others with disabilities learn from his experiences, he turned to disability employment consulting.

Steve’s work is centred on the belief that economic empowerment, proactive support, a solid professional network and education, are the four tools people with disabilities must have to secure benefits-eligible employment. Steve works to increase such opportunities by:

1) Teaching companies how and why hiring and marketing to people with disabilities increases profits. He co-presented on the subject at Google’s NYC headquarters for Google’s Accessibility Week in 2016.

  • Writing about subjects related to disability and employment.
  • Guiding people with and without disabilities towards their employment goals.

Originally from VT, USA, Steve enjoys: Teaching/mentoring youth, performing Irish fiddle music, skiing, hiking, traveling and leading impromptu food/historic tours of the most diverse place on earth, Queens, NY.

A dyed-in-the-wool fan of Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox, to his knowledge, he’s the only person who has ever performed the U.S. National Anthem for the Red Sox on the violin twice.  Steve lives in NYC with his partner, who has supported, loved and put up with him for more than five years. Their life together is dominated by their cat, who delights in driving them nuts.

Steve is one of our USA based consultants.
